- Not being able to contain his curiosity, Jem drags Scout and Dill into attempting to give Boo a note. The plan backfires when they almost get caught by Nate.
- From then on, we consider everything we found in the knot-hole our property.
- Jem, afraid for his relationship with Atticus, goes back for his pants he left when he ran away from the Radley house. His action confuses Scout.

- I've never seen anything this good!...These are ours.

- After a week of bring moody, Jem confesses to Scout that the reason of his odd behavior was because of the condition he found his pants in.

- The fact that everything on the Radley place was poison...Slipped Jem's memory.
- The knot-hole in the tree in front of the Radley's begins to contain items in it.
- Jem and Scout realize that they are the intended recipient when they find two bars of soap carved as replicas of them.
- Another item is a pack of gum, which is graciously devoured by Jem. This leaves a puzzled Scout, for she does not understand Jem's change of heart.
