- in April of 1814 Fort Mc. Henry was getting bombed while a United States citizen was aboard one of the boats trying to free americans from british control, his name was Francis Scott Key. He eventually ended up falling asleep on the shipWhen he woke up he looked over Fort Mc. Henry and noticed that the U.S. flag was still flying. This inspired him so much the he wrote a poem about it that would soonbe set to music and become our national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner"
