- Charlie Gordon is a 32 year old man who has an I.Q. of 68. Charlie's teacher, Ms. Kinnian, has told him that he would be great fit for an experiment that would increase his I.Q.  He has been chosen by Doctor Strauss (on the left) and Professor Nemur (on the right). The experiment has so far been replicated on a mouse named Algernon, and the results were positive. Both doctors believe that the procedure will be successful. 
- Climax
- Charlie had undergone the surgery and it is so far successful.  His I.Q has dramatically increased. Charlie then notices that his emotional intelligence hasn't improved alongside his mental intellect. He realizes that  his coworkers at the factory (and many other people in his life) have been making fun of him.
- Falling Action
- Charlie quits his job at the factory because his coworkers have signed a petition for him to leave his workplace. His coworkers have noticed how smart Charlie has become. Charlie's I.Q. has increased so drastically that his knowledge has surpassed the doctors. A connection forms between Charlie and Algernon. Charlie has also become attracted to Ms. Kinnian. 
- Resolution
- I'm ready to learn Ms. Kinnian!
- I miss the old Charlie Gordon ...
- The doctors have told Charlie that Algernon has become sick. Algernon's intelligence is decreasing and has stopped participating in the maze. This worries Charlie, so Charlie decides to do further research on the experiment. This is because the doctors have told Charlie that they are not smart enough to do the in-depth research that is necessary to see what would happen to Charlie.
- After completing his research, Charlie realizes that he will have the same out come as Algernon. He is already experiencing burn out and is having trouble with his memory. Algernon dies and this makes Charlie sad. Charlie is frustrated that he can't keep his knowledge. He's angry at the world for letting this experiment happen to him. He pushes everyone out in his life and tells Ms. Kinnian that he never wants to see her again.
- Charlie goes back to his normal self before the experiment. He continues to go to school and doesn't remember his past feelings towards Ms. Kinnian. This makes Ms. Kinnian sad that she couldn't keep her close relationship with Charlie. Charlie doesn't remember much of what happened during the experiment. He returns back to his normal self before the experiment, and his I.Q decreases.
