A man, belonging to the terrorist group 'The People's Will,' threw a bomb. It exploded, wounding one guard and killing the driver. Several onlookers were also killed.
The Tsar got out tohelp the wounded soldier. 20 guards surrounded the Tsar to protect him.
A second assassinthrew another bomb, blowing off the Tsar's legs. He was still aliveand calling for help.
The Tsar was taken back to the palace and given his last rites by a priest. He bled to death in front of his family in 15 minutes.
In 1887 five membersof "The People's Will" were hung, including Vladimir Lenin's older brother.
