- In this scene, Johnny wants to turn himself in, while the thought of it has never crossed Dally's mind. While devouring sandwiches and ice cream like starving animals, they both argue about the matter. Johnny says that his parents don't care about him anyway, and he'll probably get off easy. Eventually, Dally reluctantly agrees to Johnny's plan.
- I want to turn myself in
- In this scene, Ponyboy, Dallas and Johnny are talking about going home, and what their plan will be. Dallas tells Johnny that terrible things can happen to you in jail, because of his own experiences that hardened him beyond feeling. However, while they are driving to town Ponyboy spots the church on fire and gets out of the car to check it out.
- Would you rather have me hiding my whole life?
- In this scene, Johnny and Ponyboy realize that they started the fire that has now set the church on fire. However, the scene escalates when they realize that some children are stuck inside and are screaming for help. Johnny and Ponyboy rush inside to help them.
- During this part of the chapter, Johnny and Ponyboy have gotten into the church and are now hauling kids out. Cinders and embers fall from the sky and burn them, while timber and pieces of burning hot metal fall from the ceiling. However, when they are trying to get out, they both pass out and Dally helps them, also injuring himself in the process.
- In this scene, Ponyboy woke up and discovers he's in an ambulance heading to the hospital and that Johnny and Dally are injured. Johnny is in critical condition, and Dally burned an arm badly. During the torturous ride there, Ponyboy wonders what is going to happen next.
- I hope Johhny is alright... the gang needs him.
- In this scene, Ponyboy and Darry finally connect and find each other when Pony's brothers come to visit. Even though Ponyboy always thought that Darry regarded Sodapop as one of the elite, Darry thinks the same of both brothers. Ponyboy finally realizes this and sees that Darry loves him and doesn't think he's 'a waste of time'.
