In the text "By the Waters of Babylon," the main character dreams of the Place of the Gods and feels that he must travel there to fulfill his destiny. The main character sees the gods walking in a great Dead Place that he feels he must journey.
The Place of the Gods has been acknowledged in many mythological traditions as their dwelling place (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2018). Though this is not explicitly discussed in the text, the allusion can be seen as a reference to such mythological places as Asgard and Mount Olympus.
When the main character ventures to the Place of the Gods, what he sees is of great concern. In the story it states, "Very great they were, and wonderful and broken—broken in the time of the Great Burning when the fire fell out of the sky" (Benet, 4). The naming of such a Place of the Gods destroyed by fire signifies how passively following what one is told can lead to misconceptions of the world .
