- Fifteen Years ago, Horace had served his first and only sentence in a prison library. He loved rare, expensive books. So he robbed a safe every year in such a way that the money lasted for almost a year and secretly bought the books through an agent.
- My stupid greed for expensive books led me to the jail.

- For two weeks he had been studying the house at Shotover Grange, looking at its rooms, its electric wiring, its path and its garden. This afternoon Horace decided to rob the house after the two servants of the house, who remained in the Grange while the family was living in London were going to the movies. Horace saw them and got ready.
- It's the right time to rob the house, buy the books which are coming for Autumn sale and relax for the whole year.

- Horace had seen the housekeeper hanging the key at kitchen door, he took it from there and put on gloves to avoid leaving of fingerprints. Also kept his tools with him. A dog in the kitchen, made a noise and moved his tail in a friendly way.
