- King Harold's army was made up of housecarls and the fyrd. Housecarls were well-trained, full-time soldiers who were paid for their services. The fyrd were half time working soldiers on called when someone’s endangered . They marched approximately 187 miles and 30-45 miles a day. After they marched north they met just outside york.
