- patroclus leads the myrmidons into battle and the trojans flee as they think he is achilles

- patroclus kills sarpedon (zeus' son) and zeus ruminates on whether he should kill patroclus or not

- a fight breaks out for possession of sarpedons body

- apollo knocks patroclus over and gives hector and the trojans an opportunity to attack
