Civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. He was Memphis to support the strike of African-American sanitation workers who protested for equal wages.

The first hydroelectric dam in the state is built by the Tennessee Valley Authority. It brought economic development to the state and controlled flooding.
