  • Millions have perished, the world seems vacant I think to myself. All because of a disease doctors can’t seem to control or begin to even see where it came from. I remember the day it was announced and the precautions we had to immediately take. I remember the images of infected people in the newspaper. I can still see them on the TV. Their bodies were covered in some sort of rash. I remember how afraid the public were, covering their faces with a piece of cloth to prevent the virus from entering our bodies. My momma never let me out that entire year. She’d been terrified of me catching that virus. Smallpox is what the people in the newspaper called it. The symptoms of that virus were awfully related to the common flu, so each sniffle caused my momma to worry.People began praying in masses, as if we were just able to wish it away. What we needed was some type of medicine I thought to myself, something to at least make the symptoms easy on our bodies. So there wouldn’t be so many deaths. My city was so vacant, empty. Last year if I sat by an open window all I’d be able to hear is the sound of cars passing by, now all I hear is the sound of birds and insects. I’d lost my friend two months back to smallpox. She’d practically grown up with me, I’d known her since I was 3, she was my mom’s best friend’s daughter. Her name was Lilly, we’d gone to school together and had almost every class together, so when my mother announced her death I was devastated. I wasn’t surprised though as sad as it is, this virus wasn’t just in the states, it was around the whole world. My mother and I were watching the news one day. Some Doctor had been researching the pox, he’d been experimenting on patients with different herbs. Crushing them then making them eat the paste. God knows what herb he was giving them, or if it was even successful. It’d all been just trial and error from what we heard.
  • My momma was getting more and more worried and quarantine was taking a toll on all of us. She’d spend some awfully long hours talking on the phone with my grandma. It’d been a couple months since we’d last seen her, and you just didn’t know who the virus would get next so my momma took advantage of the phone calls she’d have with her, even if it was just for a few minutes, she’d never fail to tell her how much she loved her. My mother and I had been sitting in the living room like usual, when the news suddenly came on. The news reporter on the screen was wearing a mask but somehow we’d somehow seen the biggest smile on her face. “Great news guys, we’re moving forward from this pandemic” she’d said with a everso shaky voice. “Dr. Thomas Francis has claimed that the herb, White Willow, is drastically improving symptoms of the global pandemic virus Smallpox and is even preventing death from said virus.” I remember looking at my momma with tears welling out of my eyes. She leaped out of her chair tears coming out of hers as well and she’d run to hug me. “I get to see my momma!” she exclaimed.
  • With the news out, our few neighbors began playing music loudly, my momma and I celebrated that night. She'd made this delicious pie, blueberry pie. Within no time the markets began selling this herb, even going as far as dropping off the herb at people’s doorstep. Although smallpox wasn’t technically cured or eradicated, going out was a lot easier, there was less fear of getting it. Knowing if you’d caught it there wouldn’t be any deaths, just sickness then life. I’d finally got to see my grandma a few weeks later, oh how I’d missed her. I hugged her oh so tightly, she’d smelled just how I remembered her, and her touch was so gentle. Though there’d been some relief in this pandemic the public stayed using masks, terrified of what pandemic would hit us next and how that one would be controlled.
