  • Genetically Modified Organisms, also known as GMOs, started in 1994. The first genetically modified food approved for release was the Flavr Savr tomato.
  • Good morning, everyone! Today, I will be talking about GMOs and how it negatively affects us in different ways.
  • Did you guys know that Philippines was the first country in South East Asia to plant biotech corn in 2003 after it's approval for commercial planting in 2002?
  • Based on my opinion, there's nothing wrong with GMOs. I think it's much better than the organic ones.
  • This is getting confusing. Will you please explain further?
  • We're on the same page, John. GMOs are more nutritious compared to the organic ones.
  • A GMO IS the direct human manipulation of an organism’s DNA in a laboratory environment.
  • In addition, 70% of the items in American food stores contains GMOs. With that being said, it can cause different problems, specially in our own health.
  • Genetic modification may include the ADDITION OF DNA from species that would NOT BREED in nature. Genetic modification may also involve REMOVING SPECIFIC STRANDS OF DNA.
  • 812,000 HECTARES BIOTECH CORN was planted in the Philippines in 2016.
  • GMOs are not always tested thoroughly. The shortest GMO testing times are a mere 90 days, which many fear is simply not enough time to ascertain all of the risks. This could result from differences in nutritional content, allergic response, or undesired side effects such as toxicity, organ damage, or gene transfer.
  • Often GMO products are not clearly labelled, meaning people do not have the choice to decide whether or not they wish to consume GMO products.
  • GMO testing often involves performing experiments upon animals, which some people feel is a breach of animal rights.
  • As your Science teacher, I firmly believe that GMOs are really helpful.
  • Lastly, GMOs have been around for almost 20 years, so health concerns related to them should have become apparent by now.
  • Artificially implanting DNA from one species to another can save many, many years of research.
  • GMO practices can be used to produce “designer” crops, which have more nutrients, grow quicker and produce more yield, are more resistant to pesticides and use less fertilizer.
  • Thank you for that information, Mr. Smith. I am not invalidating your opinion or belief, but in my own perspective, GMOs are really harmful. Yes, it can be a way to reduce years of research and even increase crop yields, but in some aspects, it can cause different problems.
  • As your student and the person who's in charge of this presentation, I understand where you are coming from. There are concepts or beliefs that differs from one another.
  • Thank you for listening to my presentation. We may differ in our opinions and beliefs, but as long as we aim for one thing— which is to be healthy, it can be a way to promote unity. We're not sure of what will happen in the future, but we must strive to make this world a better place to live in.
