- President Jefferson sent two diplomats to Florida to buy it from Spain, but Spain's answer was no.
- Many white Americans in the Southeast wanted the U.S. to take over Florida because their slaves had been running away to Florida. They were also upset about Seminole Indian raids on their land.

- Tell them: govern Florida properly or get out.
- In 1818, Jefferson sent Andrew Jackson to Georgia with orders to end the raids. However, Jackson wasn't permitted to invade the Spanish colony.
- We have to sell it if we don't want a war!
- Jackson ignored Jefferson's orders and marched into Florida with 1,700 troops. Over the next few weeks, Jackson captured Spanish military posts, executed two British soldiers, and replaced the Spanish governor for an American. Spain demanded Jackson was called back to Washington to be punished.
- President Monroe feared war and asked his cabinet for help. All but one cabinet member advised him to remove Jackson and apologize to Spain. The other, John Quincy Adams, convinced Monroe to send Spain a blunt message: govern Florida properly or get out.
- The Spanish, also fearing war, gave in and sold Florida to the United States.
