The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
EXPOSITION: Twin Superstars
RISING ACTION: Losing the Dreadlocks
The Crossover is a heartwarming story about growing up as an identical twin. Josh loves hoops and strives to be just like his dad one day. However, life has other plans and Josh must learn to navigate being an almost teenager and all that goes along with it.
CLIMAX: Basketball to the Face
Josh and JB are identical twins who are almost 13 years old. They are both basketball superstars, but are nothing alike. Josh is quiet, has dreadlocks down to his neck, and is known for his speed. JB is loud, has a buzz cut, and is known for his jumps. Middle school isn't easy, but it's even harder when you have a twin and you are finding out who you are without him.
FALLING ACTION: Dad Passes Away
JB gets a girlfriend and spends less and less time with his brother. After losing a bet, Josh lets JB cut off one of his dreadlocks, but JB accidentally cuts off five! Their mom makes Josh cut them all off, which devastates Josh and makes him feel like he's lost his unique sense of self.
RESOLUTION: Making Up
Josh is upset about being left out of JB's life. On the way to a game, Josh's dad gets pulled over, causing Josh to be late and benched for the first half. When he finally gets in the game, he gets angry at JB and chucks the ball at his face, nearly breaking his nose. Josh gets suspended from the team and his relationship with JB is strained.
Josh and JB's beloved dad suffers a heart attack while warming up with Josh at the gym. He is in a coma for several days, and even when he wakes up, he must stay in the hospital. They spend the holidays with him in the hospital, and it seems he is on the mend. However, during the championship game, he has another heart attack and dies.
After their father dies, it becomes clear to the brothers how much they need each other and their mother, and they make up. JB gives Josh their father's championship ring, and together they shoot 50 free throws in a row, in honor of their father.
