- In his story Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut makes the point that being restricted from your full capabilities feels as though you have pound upon pounds of weight on your back. The use of displaying the people who were known to be extremely intelligent with large bags to weigh them down shows the amount of pressure these people are under. In addition, having a very attractive girl being forced to wear an ugly mask in order to disguise her beauty gives insight in what the author may have witnessed in his lifetime. This could be referencing an attractive person being shamed for her beauty or told that she needs to wear makeup to cover any issues, despite her being perfect, and therefore felt compelled by society or others to hide herself. The absurd scenes are dramatic representations of modern issues with how we treat others of above normal intelligence or beauty.
