- the battle of Lexington and Concord is where the first shots of the Revolutionary war were fired, it was known as "the shot heard round the world.
- the declaration of independence was adopted by the continental congress on July 4th 1776. the declaration summarized the colonists motivations for seeking independence, and they got the french to help them fight great Britain. the declaration of independence excluded women, African Americans and Native Americans.
- September and October 1777, during the second year of the American Revolution. It included two crucial battles, fought 18 days apart, and was a decisive victory.
- the continental army under general George Washington still in the field, enters its winter camp at Valley Forge, 22 miles from British-occupied Philadelphia. Washington chose a site on the west bank of the Schuylkill river that could be effectively defended in a British attack on the Patriots.
