  • This year, we have early literacy goals which will ensure equity and achievement for our students. The first goal is that all kindergarten students will be above "well below" at the end of the year, as measured by DIBELS.
  • Wait, what - all schools have the same goal? But our kids do not come to school as prepared...this is not fair...
  • I understand how this feels, however, I also know your talent, and how well your coaches trained your teachers and the support they can give.
  • You are experts and can prove what is possible for our boys and girls. I am excited because we have the talent and the resources,
  • It just seems that schools who only have one or two kids in well below have an unfair advantage of making their goal.
  • I know we need our kids to know how to read.
  • I think we can do this!!We are a team.
  • I know the goals are challenging, and though maybe not fair, it is the equity for our boys and girls that is important. We are all in this together!!We will meet weekly and check progress to see where support is needed.

  • At the start of the school year, every school receives and sets academic and culture of achievement goals. This year, every school received the same early literacy goals - which was a first.
  • After discussing the Cluster goals, norms and non-negotiables - I shared the early literacy goals with the principals. Principals had many questions regarding equity and the goals.
  • As the leader, it is my job to create buy in for the goals and help to adjust buy-in and mindset - keeping students at the center of the conversation. Developing a team with common goals and vision is a must!
