  • Welcome to my researching class; Research for Beginners. Today we will talk about 4 main topics:1. How to research2. Where to search3. Reliable sources4. Citing our sources
  • Researching is the search for information on a specific topic, and using that information to share what you have learned to others.
  • For example, if doing research on a tiger shark, try searching Tiger shark diet, Tiger shark lifespan' or any other information needed rather than just sharks or even tiger sharks
  • 1. How to research
  • Find a topic that interests you, or that you need to research. When searching on the internet, make sure to add more words, or to be as specific as possible to narrow the search and find more information on your topic.
  • 2. Where to search
  • Google and Google Scholar are some of the best places to start your research. Google Scholar provides free access to sources such as articles, books, academic publishes, University papers, and so many other helpful sites.
  • Some other sites to use while researching are Fact Monster, Kidtopia, and Kiddle.
  • We ask ourselves when the source was published because we don't want to use any old or outdated information in our research. Try to aim for the last 10 years at most.
  • 3. Reliable information
  • When doing research and finding sources, it is important to make sure that they are reliable. When finding reliable sources, we want to ask ourselves these 4 BIG questions:1. Does the source have an author or an editor?2. What information is being provided?3. Where was the source published, and are they reliable as publishers?4. When was the source published?
  • 4. Citing sources
  • There are 2 main ways to cite a source when researching. There is an in-text citation that is used after quoting a source, and a citation at the end on a works cited page. These can be done in a MLA or an APA format.
  • Citations are used in order to avoid plagiarism, which is the worst thing for a researcher like you to do! It is stealing someone else's hard work, and their research. We want to make sure that we are ALWAYS citing our sources!
  • Congratulations! You have finished this class. You are all now ready and prepared for your researching journey! If you feel like you may need more help though, feel free to view the links below. Happyresearching!
