  • Me leaving a store today and the hand sanitizer attendant yells out to me...
  • Goodbye Miss, have a great day!
  • My hands are full and I have my mask on...
  • I continue exiting the store without acknowledging the attendant...
  • I did not communicate therapeutically in this instance. I did not even acknowledge the attendant. I was busy, had my hands full, and my mask on. As stated by Finset, A. & Del Piccolo, L. (2011), "nonverbal communication can be conveyed through gesture and touch, by body movements and posture, by facial expression and eye contact". I recognize that my lack of even acknowledging the attendant was non-therapeutic communication
  • Goodbye Miss, have a great day!
  • I switch the brown bag in my right hand to my left hand to give myself a free hand...
  • I turn my body towards the attendant to let him know that I am looking at him...
  • With my body turned toward the attendant, with eye contact, I give him an acknowledging wave...
  • With this change in response, I have let the attendant know he was acknowledged. I used my non-verbal communication techniques of turning my body towards him, eye contact, and a friendly wave. By not acknowledging the attendant, I am showing him that he does not matter to me. With our current world situation, we are often wearing masks and our voices and facial gestures are being lost. The techniques I have used are therapeutic, nonverbal communications to let the attendant know that he is acknowledged and appreciated.
