  • Doc, what can I do to improve my mother’s mental health and her health overall?
  • Managing physical health is closely tied with looking after your mental health. So in short, being physically active and eating healthy and staying hydrated does not only address our physical health, but it benefits our mental health as well.
  • Stay hydrated? how can this effect a mental issue?
  • Well Jenny, being dehydrated affects our moods, makes it difficult to concentrate and can cause a headache. All of these can be triggers for bipolar disorder and other illnesses. As for Physical activity, being active can aid with mental health. It energizes you. It relieves tension and stress and eliminates hostility. It also improves sleep and boosts your self confidence. And when it comes to eating healthy, our brains are affected by what we eat, as some food can improve our mood. So, something like a Mediterranean-styled diet, which includes a lot of vegetables, seafood, and fresh herbs can help to alleviate depressive symptoms. A healthy lifestyle, coupled with a stable environment and schedule is proven to assist persons affected with bipolar disorder and dispersion, helping them to maintain stable moods for extended periods.

Such as, Phenothiazine, Trifluoperazine, Thioridazine and Sulpride.Anticholinergic: These drugs are mostly used to reverse extrapyramidal symptoms resulting from antipsychotic drugs used in the treatment of schizophrenia.Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI): These type of medications are mainly prescribed to treat depression, particularly persistent or severe cases.
  • Doc, I realize you did not mention any medication. What type of medication are prescribed to persons who are affected by mental health issues.
  • There are different types of medication, all with different purposes, that can be prescribed and/or utilized. All of these medications that are designed to affect behavior, mood, thoughts or perception, are called ‘Psychotropic drugs’. To educate you a bit more Jenny, I will highlight four types of Psychotropic medications that are used right here in Trinidad, some of which I'm sure you have heard of in passing or in the media.

  • Mood Stabilizers
  • are used to treat symptoms of psychosis such as delusions and hallucinations, which are characteristics of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and Alzheimer's. Antipsychotics work by altering the effects of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, serotonin, noradrenaline and acetylcholine to prevent or suppress thought disorders and extreme mood swings which result in delusions and hallucinations.
  • are used to treat social anxiety disorder, anxiety disorders, seasonal affective disorder and dysthymia, or mild chronic depression. These types of treatment work by maintaining the correct balance of neurotransmitters, which are responsible for stabilizing mood and behavior. Examples of antidepressants include: Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) which increases the amount of serotonin level in the brain and Tricyclic antidepressants.
  • are used to treat manic and depressive episodes of bipolar disorders which are characterized by unusual changes in mood, activity and energy levels and the ability to do everyday activities.
  • or anxiolytics can be used to treat different types of anxiety disorders such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) which is characterized by trouble concentrating, phobias, panic attack, nervousness, fatigue, insomnia and constant worry.
  • We tend to write off certain abnormal issues, not really realizing that something serious may be affecting that individual. So it is important that we know what mental health is, its symptoms, its causes and triggers, and what we can do as members of the community to not only attend to these persons, but also to quell the stigma.

  • You see Jenny, mental health is something that is very important, and an avenue persons of the community must be further educated on.

  • Doc, this has been a very intriguing session for me. I learnt so much, and there is more that I need to know, and I also need more time to process it all. I think that I am now in a better position in understanding my mother's illness and what I can do to help. I will also do my part to assist others in understanding how important their mental health is, and to share ways they can maintain their overall health.Thank you Doctor!
