  • I’ll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning." This is an example of a metaphor. Capulet is saying that Juliet and Paris will get married tomorrow. He is using this metaphor to describe Paris and Juliet's marriage.
  • "I have night's cloak to hide me from their eyes." This is a personification. The night’s darkness is covering Romeo from being seen by someone in the Capulet house.
  • There is no one in sight.
  • Poor soul, thy face is much abused with tears
  • "The tears have got small victory by that, for it was bad enough before their spite." This is a hyperbole. Juliet is telling Paris that her face has looked bad even before these tears.
  • My facealready looked badeven before these tears
  • "Herself poised with herself in either eye; But in that crystal scales let there be weighed. Your lady's love against some other maid. That I will show you at this shining feast" This is a metaphor. Benvolio is comparing Romeo's eyes to two sides of a balance scale. When Romeo only has eyes for Rosaline, it's as if she is on both sides of the scales. But if one side contains another beautiful woman, then Rosaline might not be as important.
  • When Romeo only has eyes for Rosaline, he will only focus on her
  • When Romeo has Rosaline and another beautiful woman, he can getover Rosaline and find someone better
  • 💔
  • “Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too boisterous, and it pricks like thorn.” This personification and simile shows that Romeo thinks that love is terrible and brings much pain. He feels this way because he confessed his love to Rosaline and she did not feel the same way. This broke Romeo’s heart and he is feeling the sadness of being rejected by the girl he loves.
  • Romeo I don't love you, and I don't want to be with you
  • I love you Rosaline
  • I must go back to see Juliet
  • “Can I go back when my heart is here? Turn back dull earth, and find thy center out.” In this metaphor, Romeo is attracted to Juliet and therefore goes back to see her because his heart is with her and feels like he needs to see her. He is comparing himself to dull earth (dirt) which is held down by gravity and therefore like this situation, he is attracted to Juliet and must go to her.
