- The main protagonist (Del Spooner), who is a homicide officer is called for the death of the famous doctor, Alfred Lanning. This is immediately suspicious as most people believe it is a suicide, not a homicide. They also find a robot who seems to not follow all 3 laws
- Crossing The Threshold
- Del refuses to accept robots in society. He personally believes robots can commit crimes. At a bar, Spooner's lieutenant tells him to stop pursuing the case and to accept the robots.
- Belly of The Whale
- Dr. Calvin assists Spooner in his investigations. She is the brains and helps Spooner learn more about the functions of robots. The artificial intelligence, VIKI also helps him around the USR lab.
- The Road of Trials
- Del has to interrogate the mischievous robot (Sonny). However, this robot seems to have actual human-like emotions and is capable of dreaming. The robot also loves somebody.
- Aggravated, Sonny escapes the lab and hides among other NS-5 robots. To capture him, Spooner and Dr. Calvin go along rows to find him. They also find that robots can naturally evolve as if they have a ghost inside them
- As Spooner's case becomes more convincing, robots suddenly begin to attack him on the highway. They go out into an epic fight. This fight reveals to us that Spooner's left arm is robotic. Spooner's lieutenant also takes his badge away since he doesn't believe robots attacked him.
