- What a stunning necklace!
- The story takes place in Paris, France in 1880. A young middle-class woman dreams of a lifestyle beyond her reach. One day her husband comes home with tickets to a very wealthy party, which she would love to attend, but fears she will look cheap.
- CLIMAX
- Mathilde Loisel is not rich, but she dreams of being rich. Her husband gives her money to buy dresses, but she is not satisfied until she borrows a necklace from a wealthy friend.
- FALLING ACTION
- My life has been horrible because of that necklace I borrowed 10 years ago....
- At the ball, Mrs Lowther is very popular., but the necklace is missing. After days of searching, she and her husband decided to replace it with an identical necklace. Replacing the necklace cost more money than they earned, and it took them ten years to pay it off.
- RESOLUTION
- Oh, dear! My friend, that necklace was false!
- After ten years of hard work, the couple paid off all their debts.
- One day, Mathilde was on her way to the market when she saw her friend who had borrowed the necklace. She decided to tell her what happened..
- The friend, Madame Forestier, tells Mathilde that the necklace is "fake" and a forgery. The reader can't help but contemplate the irony of this.
