  • Life of Peasants
  • The March Revolution
  • Down with the autocracy!
  • Down with the war!
  • The Rise of Lenin, the Bolsheviks, and the October Revolution
  • Peace, Land, and Bread!
  • "We're born - we'll die" was the sentiment among most, if not all, Russian peasants. Peasants earned their living as agricultural laborers. They worked 16 or more hours a day with little food, low wages, and the fact that they seemingly had no way out of their situation.
  • Civil War in Russia
  • What started as a strike by women textile workers turned into a rebellion of 200,000 workers, protesting pressing issues in Russia. Many soldiers even joined. With increased pressure and the rapid and large growth of the uprising, Czar Nicholas was forced to abdicate.
  • The Red Terror
  • Party of Socialist Revolutionaries
  • "Peace, Land, and Bread" was the slogan of the Lenin-led Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks appealed to many Russians, specifically soldiers and lower class citizens as they were desperate for swift and drastic change. Lenin and the Bolsheviks believed in an armed, aggressive revolt by the people in order to overthrow the government, and they seized power from the provisional government in a matter of days.
  • The Death of Lenin and Rise of Stalin
  • The Bolsheviks were not without opposition, however. The two primary armies involved in the civil war were the Communist-led Red Army and the pro-imperialist White Army (who was aided by Japan, France, Britain, etc.). The Reds won, primarily due to poor organization and preparation by the Whites.
  • After several assassination attempts on Lenin, the Communists retaliated against anyone who opposed the Bolsheviks in a brutal campaign known as the Red Terror, carried out by the Cheka (the secret police of the Bolsheviks).
  • Most likely as a result of a bullet lodged in his neck from a failed assassination attempt, Lenin died of a stroke in 1924. Prior to his death, he warned about Stalin-- he believed he had too much power and didn't trust him to act as his successor.
  • Gulags. massacres, forced labor...
