- After maya meets this new guy from her school they go to an event at the amusement park where Brian abuses Maya, her mother says she has to quit her job and go to a college close to home. While Maya just wants to make movies and kiss a boy. (page 220) Maya feels like her parents' fears shrink my universe to the four walls of this house. (page 220) Her parents controllingher causes her to run away. This event develops the theme because Maya realizedjust how restrained she is from following her dreamswhich pushes her to do things for herself and find her own path. this scene is important because it starts off the plot
- ending scene
- shortly after the important scene #1 Maya runs away Phil finds her at the cabin. This helps Maya realize what she really wants. She wants to be with Phil no matter her parents opinions. She says, Where reality bends to me and where this is our happily ever after. This shows that Maya's happily ever after is with Phil at the moment. This event adds to the theme because it shows that Maya makes her own choice on who she gets to love and be with instead of her parents beliefs of love. this scene is important because it gives maya the courage to want to stand up to her parents and fight for what she wants
- After scene number 2 Maya stands up to her parents with her aunt. She tells them with confidence, I'm informing you of my decision. I am going to New York in August. Her parents are upset and mad. They give her the choice between them or New York. Maya choses New York. Even though her decision was hard she knew what was best for her future. Maya was able to carve her own path which adds to the theme.
- It's my life!
- At the end of the book Maya was able to get what she wanted. She chose Phil and New York which are both choices her parents would not have made, but she realizes it her her life and her choice not anyone else's. Her Aunt was able to help her with college and she was able to be with Phil through the summer. Throughout the book all of Maya's thoughts and actions reflected the theme of finding your own path.
