  • Crispin
  • Asta
  • Your name is Crispin
  • Do you have thoughts about anything?
  • When Crispin's mother, Asta, dies, he loses “the only person he could claim as his own” and begins a path that will change him from timid and contained to confident and free.
  • C r s p i n s o n of F u r n i v a l
  • When Crispin gets his name from Father Quinel he is taken back by surprise as before then he had never known his name, as all his mother had called him just by son and as such the townspeople had just called him Asta’s son. This changed Crispin because Crispin began to become more questioning and led him away from Stromford.
  • When Crispin meets Bear in the town, after forcing Crispin into being his vassal, Bear forces Crispin to start thinking for himself and become more outgoing. Bear accomplishes this by forcing Crispin to answer questions like “do you believe someday none of us will have masters?” and “Do you have thoughts about anything?” forcing Crispin to start thinking for himself and beginning to set Crispin’s mind free of the chains of Feudalism (i.e. not believing in having masters).
  • In Great Wexly, after Bear is captured by John Aycliffe Goodwife Daventry reveals that on his mother’s cross he is revealed to be Lord Furnival’s illegitimate son. This changes Crispin as he understood why he and his mother had been treated the way they had, like how Aycliffe had treated them with such content and how they had never left Stromford. This made him free because he could finally claim a life of his own.
  • Aycliffe’s death was the final catalyst for Crispin’s change. This change set Crispin free from his chains that bound him to Stromford, Lord Furnival and His mother. After Aycliffe died and he and Bear left, Bear dubbed him a free man and in his soul was free.
