Peltier was born on September 27, 2004 in Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada. Peltier was born and raised Lake Huron on the largest groups of freshwater lakes on Earth. She lived with her mother and two sisters.

Her inspiration was her aunt Josephine Mandamin. Her aunt passed away on February 22, 2019. Autumns advocacy for water protection started when she was just eight years old. Autumn Peltier decided to do what she felt was needed to happen and is an Anishinaabe Indigenous rights advocate.

"I would like to acknowledge that indigenous people should have the rights to have clean drinking water." Peltier has been honoured with numerous Canadian and international awards for her activism, including multiple nominations for the International Children's Peace Prize. This year, she was one of three finalists for the award — the first time a Canadian has made this final stage.
