  • Protagonist - Snowball
  • 7 commandments
  • Antagonist - Napolean
  • Theme
  • Snowball, the pig, is a smart, kind, helpful leader who cares deeply about all of the animals he leads. He creates new ways to be more efficient, but sadly he can’t stop Napolean from messing up his plans. Snowball is beaten and kicked off of the farm after he is falsely accused of being a traitor. Once Snowball is gone, everything on animal farm goes downhill.
  • Irony: “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again: but already, it was impossible to say which was which”(Orwell 168).
  • Napolean, the pig, is a jealous, greedy, uncivil leader who cares only about himself. In the beginning of the story he is a normal pig, but the power he gains changes him. He constantly disagrees with and hurts Snowball and the other animals for his own benefit. Napolean breaks all of the seven commandments and turns into a character more evil than the humans they rose against.
  • Symbol: “After that, it did not seem strange when the next day the pigs who were supervising the work of the farm all carried whips in their trotters”(160).
  • The main theme in George Orwell’s Animal Farm is leadership corruption. Napolean was a normal pig at the beginning of the story, but as soon as he had some power and leadership, he became evil and brought the other pigs down with him.
  • Personification: “When Major saw that they had all made themselves comfortable and were waiting attentively he cleared his throat and began”(17).
  • The animals just had a revolution against the humans and overtook them. In the end, Napolean and the rest of the pigs end up being worse than the humans. In other words, the animals just put in a bunch of work only to get back to where they started.
  • The whip is used to symbolize abusive use of power. Throughout the story, whips are used to assert dominance and to give the handler more control over the animals in a violent way. When the animals take over the farm, one of the first things they get rid of are the whips. When Napolean brings the whips back, the leaders become corrupt again. The whips are a symbol of abusive power returning on the farm.
  • Throughout the novel, Orwell gives the animals human traits and characteristics such as being able to speak and think as humans do. This helps readers to connect with the characters more and to understand the story better.
