- Money was the cause for Shay's Rebellion. The American Revolutionary war left the government with a high amount of debt. The Continental Congress and state government imposed a Poll tax to help pay for the debts of the Revolutionary War.
- Shay's and around 1,200 farmers went to a state arsenal trying to seize weapons before going on a march to Boston in January, 1787. The governor sent more than 4,000 troops to defend the arsenal but before they arrived, Shay's attacked and the group defending the arsenal opened fire. 4 farmers died.
- National leaders responded by electing the first president, George Washington, and by writing the nations Constitution to try to make a better and stronger government.
