  • Antietam was the most bloodiest battle of the Civil War for the North. This battle started on September 17, 1862 and it only lasted one day. Antietam had a total of 22,717 casualties. Union had a total of 11,650 losses and Confederate had a total of 9,300 losses.
  • What
  • For the South, General Robert E. Lee,and for the North, General B. McClellan. Robert E. Lee commanded the Army of Northern Virginia in the civil war. McClellan was the commanded of the of the Army of Potomac, and he fought as the general for the Union Army.
  • Where
  • The Union Army was ready to go into disaster mode in the North because of the poor leadership. The Confederacy was one victory away from seeming invincible. Lee thought that if he won a battle on Northern soil, then he could win the war. Lee wanted to invade Maryland to start rebellion in an already divided state.
  • Results
  • It was said that "you couldn't walk from one end of the field to the other without stepping on a dead body".
  • The bloodiest battle of the Civil War took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland. They fought in a field with a church in the background this church is Dunker church and it is still standing to this day. They also fought each other from either side of the Antietam Creek.
  • The Union won the Battle of Antietam. Even though the North had more losses than the South they still managed to take the win.
