- Penelope finally thinks her husband is forever gone, so she gives a contest to whoever can string Odysseus's bow can be her husband. Still not over Odysseus, she gives the announcement to all the suitors.
- 'My lords, hear me: suitors indeed, you commandeered this house to feat and drink in, day and night, my husband being long gone, long out of mind.'
- Athena warns Odysseus of the suitors at his home and of the competition Penelope has just started. She advises him to disguise himself as a beggar and to go compete in the challenge to win Penelope back.
- The palace is overrun with beggars, disguise yourself and go compete in her challenge!
- After using Athena's advice, Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar and wants to compete in the challenge. He succeeds with the bow after nobody else can, making him the technical winner of the challenge.
- 'My lords, contenders for the queen, permit me: a passion in me moves to speak out... But let me try my hand at the smooth bow! Let me test my fingers and my pull to see if any of the oldtime kick is there, or if thin fare and roving took it out of me.'
