Mary Anning was born on May 21, 1799 to Richard Anning and Mary Moore. She was named after an older sister, who burned to death in a fire. Ever since she was very young, Mary had a special bond with her father and the two were very close.
Mary would help her father with his business ; going to the beach all the time and digging up bones and fossils for her father to sell.
WhenMary was 8, her father slipped and fell off one of the sea side cliffs, whichled to his death three years later.
One day while Mary was scouring the local beach her father and her used to go to, a passing tourist offered to buy the beautiful shell in her hand. This then inspired Mary to reopen her father’s “Curios” business along with her brother.
CURIOS
One day while digging up more shells at the beach, her brother found a huge fossil which at the time he thought was a bone from a crocodile’s body. Mary thought otherwise and hired laborers to dig at the beach. Her instinct paid off, Mary managed to unearth the first complete fossil of an Ichthyosaur.
It was then put up at a museum, which attracted the attention of the GeologicalSociety Of London. At first, no one paid attention to the person who found the fossils, and instead debated on what animal it could have been.
