We are The Eagles in English 1010, taught by prof. Ribeiro
There are 4 contributions to rape culture: prevention/awareness, victim blaming, social expectations, and alcohol consumption.
Sierra: We are discussing rape culture in college. Rape culture is a place where sexual violence against women is normalized and excused.
If it continues on, college students will be affected and either education will become jeopardized.
Lizbeth: A brief history on rape culture in colleges begins with Susan Brownmiller coining the term date rape.
In 1980 a case emerged known as Alexander v. Yale. The professor was allegedly sexual assulting 5 of his students.
There was a great influence for title IX which also prohibits sex-based discrimination in any school or education program that receives federal money.
The case lost and resulted in most U.S. universities instituting a procedure for sexual assaults and harassment.

Alejandro: introduces alcohol consumption. At least 50% of student sexual assaults include alcohol. More than 97,000 college sexual assaults cases linked to drinking happen each year.
At age of 18, 60% of young people have had a drink.
Mentions an experience he recalls of his friend sexually assaulting someone. It is a disturbing experience because of how much alcohol can change a person.
