- Valentine, one of the duke's men enter with news from one of Olivia's attendant stating that Olivia can not love him due to her mourning the death of her brother.

- Viola is rescued from a shipwreck by the captain and the wash in Illyria. Though Viola's brother Sebastian is missing and she thinks he has died.

- With the captain's help, Viola decides to disguise herself as a man to seek service with Duke Orsino.

- Sir Toby Belch, Olivia's Uncle and Maria, Olivia's maid are talking about Sir Andrew wanting to court Olivia.
