  • Greetings! My name is Josh Watson and I teach College Composition at Brightpoint Community College in Richmond, VA. In my spare time my family and and I enjoy travelling the backroads of Virginia and exploring cemeteries and grave yards...like this one!
  • One thing I've always been drawn to in my teaching career is finding new ways of engaging students that push them to be more creative while also developing practical skills for their professions. I see gamification as an opportunity to do this in a way that many of them can relate to: game strategies and design.
  • But don't you have any concerns or questions about gamification and your course?
  • Thanks for asking, Mr. Skeleton! I do, indeed, have a question regarding balance of design to offer a model that can be engaging for those who are interested in gaming while not alienating those who might not be so inclined. Currently I am trying to incorporate some element of gamification with "Side Quest" assignments and character development, but I have noticed some students would prefer to avoid this level of creativity and stick strictly to generating traditional assignments for a grade. I'd love to know how (or if) a balance can be achieved!
