  • Celebration of Gerald and Sheila's Engagement
  • The Inspector Calls
  • Sheila is Interrogated
  • 'You're squiffy'The Birlings and Gerald Croft have gathered to celebrate his engagement with Sheila Birling. Both Mr Birling and Gerald Croft take the opportunity to talk about business. During this scene, it is also stated that Eric is drunk, which is revealed through Sheila's remark of 'you're squiffy'.
  • Gerald's Affair is Exposed
  • 'One line of inquiry at a time'Inspector Goole arrives at the house late at night, informing Mr Birling, Eric and Gerald that young girl has died in the infirmary after committing suicide by drinking large amounts of bleach. He questions Mr Birling first, showing him a photo of Eva Smith. This one-on-one examination results in Mr Birling feeling targeted, but the inspector insists on everyone else waiting their turn. After learning that his father fired Smith, Eric criticizes him and expresses empathy.
  • Sybil Birling finds out about Eric's drinking — as well as his Child
  • I went to the manager and told him this girl had been very impertinent – and – and - ”Sheila enters the room and is also informed about the death of Eva Smith, which — in addition to how she died — upsets her. The inspector interrogates her next, and it is revealed that Sheila had Eva fired from her job at ~Milwards's, a clothing store she frequently visited with her mother. This occurred after Eva was showing a dress Sheila wanted to her, holding it up as though she were wearing it. This made Sheila feel jealous,, and she deeply regrets her actions.
  • Inspector Goole was a Fake?
  • “She was young and pretty and warm-hearted- and intensely grateful'Gerald's affair with Eva Smith - known to him as Daisy Renton - is exposed when Inspector Goole talks to him next. He confesses that he defended Eva from a drunk man in a bar and gave a place to stay for a couple of months. Upon hearing about this, Sheila returns the engagement ring to him and Gerald leaves the house.
  • “I’ve done nothing wrong – and you know it.”When Sybil Birling is questioned, she denies having any responsibility regarding Eva's death. It is revealed that Eva came to her for help, whilst addressing herself as 'Mrs Birling'. Sybil reveals that this caused her to refuse Eva's plea for help, in addition to convincing the other members of her charity to do the same. She blames Eva's misfortune on the man who got her pregnant, stating that he ought to have married her. However, the father turns out to be Eric and Sybil [could be said to] somewhat feel a hint of regret - but very little is expressed.
  • “But how do you know it’s the same girl? ... We’ve no proof it was the same photograph and therefore no proof it was the same girl”Gerald returns after the inspector leaves, presenting his theory that Inspector Goole wasn't a real police officer. After making a few phone calls to the police department and the infirmary. the others believe this to be true. Only Sheila and Eric still feel remorseful, and Mr Birling states that the only thing they should be worried about is a public scandal. However, not long afterward, the infirmary calls saying that a girl has died by drinking bleach, and the police department would like to speak to all those present at the Birling's house.
