- In your own words, Mr. Tate
- I was just leaving my office to go home when B- Mr. Ewell came in, very excited he was, and said get out to the house quick, some man raped his girl.
- Well I tell you why I didn’t. It wasn’t necessary, Mr. Finch. She was mighty banged up. Something sho’ happened, it was obvious… It was her right eye, Mr. Finch
- How come you didn’t call a doctor? … Was it her left eye facing you or her left eye looking the same way as you?
- Would you tell us in your words what happened on the evening of November twenty-first please?
- Well, Mayella was raisin this holy racket so I dropped m’load amd run as fast as I could. I run up to th’window and I seen - I seen that black man yonder ruttin’ on my Mayella
- Mr. Tate, the sheriff, describes the events that led up to his arrival upon the incident
- You’re left handed
- Will you write your name and show us?
- Atticus questions Mr. Tates’s decisions during the incident. He knows that Tom is unable to do any harm to her right side of their body due to him not having a fully functional left hand.
- Who is he? … Then what happened?
- That’n yonder, Robinson… He chunked me on the floor an’ choked me’n took advantage of me.
- Mr. Ewell, her dad, is describing the events that happened that night
- What did your father see in the window, the crime of rape or the best defense to it? Why don’t you tell the truth child, didn’t  Bob Ewell beat you up?
- Atticus baits Mr. Ewell into showing what his dominant hand is in order to prove his point that it was he who actually sexually assaulted Mayella
- Mayella is asked about the events that day and who it is that assaulted her.
- Atticus starts his case with simple answers to show the jury how her home life is. His questions become deeper and deeper as he backs Mayella into a corner where he tries to reveal the truth. After a rapid fire of questions thrown at Mayella, she is so scared that she doesn’t provide a single answer to any of Atticus’s questions.
