  • Holden asks Horwitz the cab driver where the ducks gone in the lagoon at Central Park during the winter. This part during Chapter 12 shows Holdens concerns about what happens after death by instead asking where the ducks go when the lake freezes over. During this scene Holden's concerns about growing up start hear and then develop more and more after this important scene.
  • "Well, you know the ducks that swim around in it? In the springtime and all? Do you happen to know where they go in the wintertime, by any chance?

  • While at the natural history museum, Holden says how he likes the museum so much because everything stays the same. Throughout the novel, Holden says how he hates change and tries to keep everything the way it is despite the constant change during life.
  • The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody'd move.

  • Holden watches Phoebe go round and round on the carousel whilst he sits alone on a bench emphasising his isolation from everyone. The repetitive motion of the carousel going round and round shows the cycle of life and how it keeps going on. This scene shows how Holden finally accepts the changes that are inevitable and that he will be okay when he grows up and enters the adult world. He says how happy he is just watching Phoebe on the carousel showing his acceptance of the future.
