  • Gloucester explains his family situation and how he has a bastard son to Kent. Edmund wishes to be treated as a proper son as opposed to a bastard.
  • I must find a way to serve my King.
  • King Leer calls a court meeting to discuss the division of his kingdom among his three daughters. He requests them to state how much they love him in order to receive the largest plot of land; however, Leer has already divided the kingdom. He instantly gives Goneril and Regan their piece of the kingdom proving it has been pre-decided.
  • Nothing.
  • What is that letter?
  • The quality of nothing hath not such need to hide itself (35).
  • When it is Cordelia's turn she says nothing. This enrages Leer and causes him to disown Cordelia and allows Goneril and Regan to split what was meant to be Cordelia's land.
  • You must leave now. Go armed.

  • Kent attempts to speak up for Cordelia but he is promptly shut down and banished from the kingdom. Goneril and Regan see the King's rashness and decide to make a deal to get rid of him together.
  • You must treat Lear like a peasant and get him out of here! I cannot deal with him and his retinue any longer.
  • Your wish is my command.
  • The two rivals for Cordelia's hand in marriage, King of Burgundy and King of France, enter and are informed of the new situation regarding Cordelia and her lack of a dowry. Burgundy leaves but France stays and professes his love for her.

  • Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise
  • Kent undergoes a disguise so that the King will not recognize him. He meets the King in his disguise, flatters him, and joins his retinue.
  • Edmund writes a fake letter in his brother Edgar's hand. He allows Gloucester to see the letter. The letter reads of Edgar's planned betrayal of Gloucester and his intent to take his inheritance while still young. Gloucester is outraged by this and blames it all on nature showing his fatalist characteristics.
  • Edmund deceives Edgar, makes him flee town, and lies low so that he can not tell the true story to Gloucester. Edmund has managed to trick both Gloucester and Edgar to believe he is on their side while tricking both of them.
  • Goneril is fed up with King Leer and his 100 knights and orders her servant Oswald to treat them badly in order to force them to leave.
  • After Oswald disrespects the King and his Knights, Leer decides to stay with Regan instead.
