  • I attended Princeton University. I played a big role in the American Revolution with the troops. I also oversaw the government during the war.
  • I am James Madison and I represented Virginia in the Constitutional convention.
  • James Madison
  • My role in the constitutional convention was presenting the Virginia plan to assemble delegates in Philadelphia and overseeing the difficult process. I also helped by writing the federalist papers for the final draft of the constitution.
  • I made a major contribution in revising Virginia's laws to freely exercise religion.
  • James Madison was the first to bring up slavery in the convention. Madison advocated for slaves and after further discussion the three-fifths compromise was made.
  • How the Founders approached slavery
  • During this time, there were still free states and slave states.
  • The three-fifths compromise meant that every five slaves would be counted as 3 people for representation/taxation purposes.
  • States such as South Carolina and Virginia had big slave populations, so they wanted them to be counted as residents.
  • Constitutional Compromise
  • States that had little to no slave population did not want them to count.
  • VERSUS
  • The 3/5th compromise
  • This was because non-slave white people wanted to have more control and a bigger/better representation.
  • Should southern states be part of the union?
  • Debate and Compromises over slavery
  • Many arguments and discussions over slavery continued throughout the few months of the constitutional convention
  • Slavery is inconsistent with our countries principles
  • Every master of slaves is born a petty tyrant
  • Constitutional Compromise
  • The main purpose of this law was to ensure that slaves wouldn't disrupt the representation/tax that the states get. By compromising, and making every 5 slaves only count as 3, this would mean that states with more slaves and states with less slaves would both be satisfied. This is very diminishing and invalidating to the slaves at the time because it is basically stating how they aren't even considered whole people.
  • The lasting legacy of the Constitution is that many of the laws and decisions made back then are still used in today's politics and society. There have been many positive outcomes of the constitutional convention such as separating power, checks and balances, having a stricter set of laws, etc. However, there have also been laws which have caused conflict and controversy. The constitution will always be a huge step we took as a country and has had a great impact, but in a growing society improvements will always be necessary.
