- Prince Prospero is introduced in the story as well as the “red death” which has been long devastating the country.
- Climax
- Prospero wants to escape the natural process of death by bringing a thousand of his noble and rich friends to his castle and simply hiding from the disease which is sweeping through the kingdom
- Falling action
- Guests are arriving at the castle and the different colored rooms are described from east to west . No one enters the last room which is black and red and people are scared to enter. Also the chiming of the clock every hour provokes anxiety.
- Resolution
- As midnight is about to come, a guest dressed as the red death arrives at the party and nobody thinks much about it because it was a mask party after all.
- As Prospero goes to confront the guest, he suddenly falls to the floor, dead.
- The other guests at the party realize that the masked man is the disease itself, the actual red death. The party-goers try to do something about the situation but all die too. Prospero’s efforts to escape death fail and the red death takes over the castle.
