- Sea otters aren't affected by what happens on land! I can do whatever I want!
- You're wrong! On-land occurrences definitely impact life in marine environments, especially sea otters.
- Prove it!
- Fine.
- First of all, there are microcystins, a kind of cyanobacteria which live in nutrient-rich water, and are carried into marine environments through run-off from on-land agricultural fields.
- Then, these microcystins are eaten by shellfish as they filter feed, and then when sea otters eat these shellfish, the microcystins enter the otter’s system and kill them.
- And?
- There’s more, though. Have you ever heard of toxoplasma gondii?
- Well, it’s a parasite that lives in cats - land-based animals, as I’m sure you know - and waste from those cats gets washed out to sea and threatens the marine population.
- Not yet.
- And on top of all that, destruction of wetlands, which are environments that would otherwise act as natural buffers to these dangerous organisms, allows microcystins and toxoplasma gondii to travel freely into the ocean.
- That's not good.
- No, it's not.
- So, yeah, events on land definitely affect sea otters.
- Yeah, I can see that now.
