- Lyddie’s mother sends her a letter saying that she and her brother will be working to pay off debts after they were both doing very well at the farm by themselves.

- Lyddie makes an impactful decision to give her precious calf money that was supposed to reunite her family at the farm to a runaway slave.

- The rain makes the roads very muddy and it takes longer to get to Lowell. Lyddie thinks of what she should’ve done.
- I wished I had saved my dollars and walked-rain or no rain. Surely I could have made it just as fast.
- Lyddie was forced by her mother to do something she didn’t need to do because she was already doing a good job at the farm.
- She had to make a decision to give the money to a runaway slave or keep it to reunite her family.
- Lyddie has to go against the muddy roads left by the rain, and it takes a longer time to get to Lowell.
