- I want to be a scientist
- Girls can't be scientists, that's for boys only. Girls aren't smart enough.
- Yeah, girls are supposed to stay home and clean. That's what my dad told me
- Today in Mr. Johnson's 1st-grade class was career day. Mr. Johnson taught his students all about different careers and asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up.
- Martha raised her hand "I want to be a scientist. I want to explor-". Corey interrupted "Girls can't be scientists, that's only for boys. Girls aren't smart enough."
- Another student, Justin, added "Yeah, girls are supposed to stay home and clean. That's what my dad told me"
- What's wrong?
- Martha began to cry quietly in her seat. Clearly noticing that the class was getting uncontrollable Mr. Johnson quickly moved on to the next topic.
- Martha was upset the whole bus ride home. She sat alone and cried while Corey and Justin chattered.
- When Martha got home she burst into tears. "Whats wrong?" one of her moms asked. Martha sobbed as she told them what had happened.
