- Johnsy fell seriously ill in November. She had pneumonia. Sue got very worried and sent for the doctor. Although he came everyday, there was no change in Johnsy's condition.
- Sue and Johnsy are two young artists who share a small house.
- It seems Johnsy has made up her mind that she won't get well. If she doesn't want to live, medicines can't help her.
- Sue tried her best to make Johnsy take an interest in things around her.
- The leaves, they are falling faster now. When the last leaf falls, I will die.
- Nine, eight, seven, six, five...
- Now Sue was even more worried. She thought for a long time how to prevent Johnsy from dying.
- What is it, dear?
- There are only 3 leaves left and there is a storm coming. What do I do?
- The next day...
- I have been depressed and gloomy. The last leaf has showed me how wicked I have been. I have realised it is a sin to want to die.
- I'm so sorry Sue. You have looked after me so lovingly and i have not cooperated with you.
- But how is this possible? It was so windy yesterday.
- Johnsy! Look outside, there is still one leaf left!
- I hope she doesn't find out I painted the last leaf.
