Ponyboy gets jumped by the Socs when he is walking home from the movies. This shows the relationship between the Socs and Greasers.

Dally is very rude to two Socs girls named Cherry and Marcia at a drive-in theatre. Johnny, Ponyboy, and Two-bit are nice to them. Ponyboy relizes that even the Socs have it rough. And the conflict that was represented in this chapter would be character .vs. character.

After the movie, Johnny and Ponyboy fall asleep in the vacant lot. When Ponyboy returns home, his eldest brother Darry is very mad and ends up punching him! Both of his brothers want him to come back. Ponyboy and Johnny run away.

Ponyboy and Johnny decide to go to the park to cool down. Then a group of Socs jump them. The leader, Bob tries to drown Ponyboy in a fountain but Johnny stabs him with the blade that he has been carrying around since he got jumped by the same Soc. After this, they go and meet Dally who gives the $50 and a gun. He tells them to go and hide in an abandoned Church in Windrexville.

Ponyboy and Johnny are now safe in the old Church in Windrexville. Johnny goes out to buy supplies. Johnny and Ponyboy must cut their hair and Ponyboy has to bleach his so they don't get caught by the police. Ponyboy is hesitant because he is proud of his "tuff" hair.

The old Church is on fire! Ponyboy and Johnny blame themselves as one of them must have not put out their cigarette properly. They quickly find out that there are children trapped inside! Johnny and Ponyboy run into the Church with Dally seconds behind them. They were able to save the kids but they were badly hurt.
