- The story starts off with the main character named Danny Lopez. His dad is Mexican while his mom is American. He feels like he never fits in because of his skin color. When he at his private school, he is a shade darker than everyone else. But when he goes with his cousin Sofia for the summer, in National City where he grew up with all his cousins, aunts and uncles, he still doesn't fit in with the area because he is one shade lighter than everyone else.
- Uno and Danny
- Danny loves baseball. But yet, he feels as if he's not good enough. He feels like he's not good enough to even try out for his school's baseball team. Danny doesn't compare to the guys on the team who have been playing since they were 5 years old on professional Little League teams.
- Uno and Uncle Ray's Confrontation
- Danny hasn't seen his father since he left when he was still a little kid. He has some memories of him but doesn't know where he ran off too. He believes that his dad must've ran away to Ensenada, MX. Sometimes, Danny will write letters to his dad, talking about how he made the baseball team, how he has a girlfriend, how he went out to the fair with all the new friends he has made. But truth be told, he never sends the letter, and the letters are unreal and untrue.
- Eavesdropping Gone Wrong
- A character in the book named Uno is a is one of a couple African-Americans living in National City. Most of the people he knows, Sofia also knows. Therefore they are familiar with each other. Sofia introduces Danny to all of her friends, including Uno, and most of her male friends love to play baseball just like Danny. But Uno at first doesn't seem to be very fond of Danny.
- After a conflict between Uno's younger brother and Danny, Uno eventually punches Danny in the face. When his Uncle Ray sees what has happened to Danny's face, he confronts Uno and asks Danny straight to his face if Uno did it. If he did, Ray would have to show Uno a lesson. But Danny lies, defends Uno, and says he got the bruise from running into another player during a baseball game.
- Danny's other uncle, Tommy, and Sofia were talking in the living room when Danny decides to eavesdrop. The conversation revolved around Danny's mom and Danny's biological dad. They claimed that one weekend Wendy, his mother, had come down to National City one weekend because of Danny's dad temper. Sofia said that Danny was different and wouldn't be like his father. Afterwards, Danny decides to to sneak back up the stairs into his room, confused and a little sad.
