- Jonas, an eleven year-old boy, going to school, living in a "utopian world" where everything is done systematically.
- SHOT 3MEDIUM TWO SHOT
- My children...be safe, until I return.
- At the age of 12, every person is assigned a job that they will do for the rest of their lives. The group of elders decide this based of the persons: Academic achievements, interests, behavior etc.
- SHOT 4MEDIUM CLOSE-UP
- He is assigned the role of the giver, the highest ranking job in society. The role of the giver is undisclosed to society. Jonas, not having any knowledge of this job, is now being trained by the previous giver. His training wasn't easy.
- SHOT 4MEDIUM CLOSE-UP
- He finally understands the responsibility that has been bestowed upon him and learns how to "be" the giver. But, once he learns the truth about the world, and how everyone's emotions are taken away, he decides to escape the "utopia" into an unknown dystopia.
- Jonas escapes the utopia with a baby named Gabriel who he had felt pity for, since he was destined to be "released" by the society leaders, as he was considered incapable of contributing to society.
- Gabriel and Jonas finally escape the society and are now in a world with emotions, pain, and, to some extent, freedom. But their struggles aren't over yet.
