- Setting: Montinui; Moana's Grandmother Tala tells the story of Te Fiti, Te Kā, and the Demigod Maui. A young Moana discovers the ocean and gets a glimpse into her destiny.
- Climax
- The villagers discover that the crops have become corrupted and there aren't as many fish. Moana shares they should go beyond the reef, much to the disapproval of her father. Moana decides to venture past the reef, but fails. Her grandmother reveals that their people were once voyagers, and it's Moana's destiny to find Maui and deliver the heart of Te Fiti.
- Falling Action
- Moana travels to find the Demigod Maui to try to convince him to fix his mistake and deliver the heart to Te Fiti. Maui initially refuses, but Moana is able to persuade him and they begin their journey, grabbing Maui's fish hook and encountering various monsters along the way.
- Resolution
- Moana and Maui attempt to defeat Te Kā for the first time, but fail as Maui's fish hook gets destroyed. Maui and Moana have an argument and then part ways.
- Feeling discouraged, Moana tells the Ocean to choose someone else to deliver the heart. She is then visted by her grandmother, who provides some encouragement. Moana decides to try a second time, and is very close to failing when Maui comes back to help. Together, they are able to return the heart to Te Kā, who turns back into Te Fiti.
- Te Fiti thanks Moana and forgives Maui for taking her heart. She fixes his hook, and provides Moana a boat to return home in. Moana and Maui share a goodbye, and Moana journeys back home.
