- The woman said
- There was a large woman in the story who walking late in the night when a boy tried to snatch here purse, but because of the boy's and purse's weight combined he fell down. The large woman walked up to him and kicked him, the she picked him up by the collar and said:
- She held him tightly and bend down to pick her purse and said:
- I didn't aim to.
- Yes' M
- Yes, M
- Pick up my pocket book, boy, and give it here.
- And your face is dirty. Ain't you got nobody at home to tell you to wash your face then it will get washed this evening.
- Now ain't you ashamed of yourself.
- If Iturn you loose will you run?
- Then I won't turn you loose.
- What did you want it for?
- You a lie !
- Sweat popped up on the boy's face and he began to struggle.Mrs. Jones jerked him around and put a half nelson about his neck and dragged him up the street. When she reached her door she dragged the boy inside a large kitchen.
- No' M, I just want you to turn me loose.
- No'M
- You ought to be my son.I would teach you from right to wrong.
- Was I bothering you when I turned that corner.
- But you put yourself in contact with me.
- Are you hungry?
- She switched on the light and left the door open. He could hear other people talking so he new they were not alone. The lady asked :
- The water dripping#160; from his face, the boy looked at her. After he had dried his face there was a long pause not knowing what to do he dried his face again. Then he saw the door open he could run away.
- I wanted a pair of blue suede shoes.
- There's nobody at home.
- You gonna take me to jail.
- Well you didn't have to snatch my pocket book. You could have asked me.
- Roger
- What is your name?
- Here I am trying to cook a bite to eat, and you try to snatch my pocket book. Mabye, you ain't been to your supper either.
- Then, Roger go to that sink and wash your face.
- Then we will eat, i believe your hungry to try and snatch my pocket book.
- Not with that face.
- The woman was sitting on a couch. and said:There was another long pause. Roger frowned not knowing he frowned. The woman said :
- You thought I was going to say but, didn't you?Well I wasn't going to say that.
- I to have done things. You sit down while i make something to eat.
- I were once young and I wanted things I could not get.
- Mrs. Jones did not watch Roger if he was going to run away, nor try to snatch the purse which she left behind.The woman answered: Don't believe I do.The woman did not ask anything else about Roger instead she talked to him about her job. When they finished eating she gave Roger 10 dollars and said go by yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time don't go steal someone's pocket book because shoes got by devilish ways will burn your feet.I hope you behave yourself son.
- Do you need somebody to go to the store?
- That will be fine.
- She led him down the hall to the front door and said The boy wanted to say something other thanThank You M'amBut although his lips move he couldn't say that as he turned to the foot of the barren stoop and looked at the large woman . Than she shut the door.
